Bruges is a city my Significant Other and I have talked about visiting for what feels like forever, and I never thought we would get there. But thanks to airline schedules, competitive airfares and a trip booked to the Anzac 100 year memorial in France this year, the stars aligned and we grabbed the opportunity to finally fulfil this dream.

A chocoholics paradise and a UNESCO World Heritage site, this beautiful city is built for walking and cycling; designed for you to get lost in and then easily finding your way home when you want to. If you get cold you can escape into one of the multitude of cafes and bars for a delightfully decadent hot chocolate or a cheeky Rose (or both). There are cobblestone streets galore, amazing architecture of narrow houses and stunning churches, canals where you can tour in a boat and enjoy the city from a totally different point-of-view, and to top if off, excellent foodie delights. We stumbled across the weekly food and flower market that takes place in the Markt Square (the main place to meet) and soaked up the relaxed atmosphere and ambience of this gem of a city during our 3 night stopover on our way to Paris.

For women travelling solo, or a group of girls on a getaway, this felt a really safe destination offering many excellent museums, art galleries and lovely shopping options to indulge in as well. Importantly, there are chocolate shops everywhere! There is also a good selection of beautiful hotels and luxury guesthouses/bed and breakfasts to choose from, that are either in the centre or within easy walking distance of the old town. We stayed at B&B De Corenbloem Luxury Guesthouse, where the room was beautiful, the breakfast excellent and our hosts so very helpful. A sneaky photo of our favourite lounge area is included below….

Please enjoy our little photo story and, if you get the chance, visit Bruges for a step back in time to a beautifully preserved city that is close to Brussels and so easy to get to. NB. Avoid peak season…..
