Why the right hotel, villa or retreat can transform the way you experience a destination.
Choosing the right accommodation is one of the most important travel decisions a woman can make. Whether you’re planning a solo adventure, travelling with friends or joining a small group journey, where you stay will influence your comfort, confidence, wellbeing and connection to the destination.
For women especially, accommodation should do far more than provide somewhere to sleep.
The right property can shape an entire journey. It can influence how confident you feel stepping out into a new city, how deeply you connect with a destination, how restored you feel at the end of each day and how safe you feel when travelling solo.
At Travelling Divas, we spend a lot of time selecting hotels & villas. Not because we are searching for the most expensive option, but because we understand that where you stay influences how you experience a place.
You’ll notice several of the hotels featured throughout this article are properties we use ourselves. That’s intentional as we believe the true test of a hotel isn’t how it photographs, but how women feel when they stay there.
Over the years, I’ve become convinced that accommodation is one of the most influential parts of any journey. A great hotel adds comfort and ease, but it also deepens your connection to a destination. Whether it’s a family-run guesthouse in a remote Italian village, a heritage palace in Rajasthan, a wellness retreat in Sri Lanka or a villa in Tuscany, the best properties offer more than a place to sleep.
They become part of the experience itself.
Price and quality are not always the same thing. Some of the most memorable hotels we’ve used have been grand city icons; others have been intimate boutique properties, mountain retreats or countryside sanctuaries. The goal isn’t luxury for luxury’s sake. It’s choosing accommodation that best enhances the experience of the destination.
These are the qualities we believe matter most.
1. Location That Gives Freedom, Not Friction
Location is perhaps the single most important decision a traveller makes.
The right hotel allows you to step outside and immediately feel connected to a destination. You can wander to a nearby café for your morning coffee, stroll through a local market, visit a gallery, or linger over dinner without calculating the journey back.
The wrong location can leave you spending valuable holiday time in taxis, navigating unfamiliar transport systems, or feeling disconnected from the very city you came to explore.
One of our favourite examples is Nobis Hotel Copenhagen. Positioned beside Tivoli Gardens, City Hall Square and the Glyptotek museum, it allows guests to experience Copenhagen on foot, which is often the most rewarding way to discover a city.
The best hotels don’t simply place you in a destination. They place you in the middle of its story.
2. A Room That Feels Like a Private Exhale
After a day of museums, walking tours, shopping, galleries or sightseeing, your room becomes far more than a place to sleep.
It becomes your sanctuary.
Natural light, generous bathrooms, thoughtful storage, beautiful bedding, quiet surroundings and a comfortable chair for reading or enjoying a glass of wine all contribute to how restorative a space feels.
One detail often overlooked is room size. In cities such as Tokyo, where space is at a premium, generous rooms can transform a stay. At Palace Hotel Tokyo, entry-level rooms begin at approximately 45 square metres — remarkably spacious by Tokyo standards and one of the reasons guests consistently describe the hotel as calming and restorative.
Luxury is often found in space — space to unpack, space to breathe and space to simply be.
3. A Hotel That Feels Safe Without Constantly Talking About Safety
Women frequently tell us that feeling comfortable matters more than any particular luxury feature.
The best hotels create this feeling effortlessly.
A welcoming concierge team. Staff who recognise guests. Well-lit entrances. Thoughtfully chosen neighbourhoods. Reliable transport connections. A lobby where you feel comfortable sitting alone with a book or enjoying a drink before dinner.
It’s not about visible security measures. It’s about confidence. When a hotel is chosen well, you stop thinking about safety altogether because you feel completely at ease.
A long-time Paris favourite, 4-star boutique hotel La Maison Favart embodies this beautifully. Tucked away beside the Opéra-Comique in the 2nd arrondissement, it offers the rare combination of a central location and a deeply personal atmosphere. Guests are greeted warmly, the surrounding streets are easy to navigate, and returning after a day in Paris feels less like arriving at a hotel and more like returning to a private Parisian residence.

4. A Sanctuary, Not Just a Base
Travel is exciting, but even the most enthusiastic traveller needs moments of pause.
The finest hotels recognise that guests need somewhere to retreat between experiences. A beautiful library, a rooftop terrace, a peaceful courtyard, a spa, a pool or simply a comfortable lounge can completely change the rhythm of a stay.
One of the reasons we love The Other House in South Kensington is that it blurs the line between hotel and private club. Guests have the independence of a beautifully designed apartment combined with elegant shared spaces, wellness facilities, dining in and quiet corners where it is easy to spend an afternoon reading, working or simply enjoying the luxury of having nowhere to be.
Sometimes the most memorable part of a day is the hour spent doing absolutely nothing.
5. Dining That Makes Every Evening Effortless
One of the greatest luxuries in travel is not having to make another decision.
After a full day exploring, knowing there is an excellent restaurant, elegant bar or welcoming lounge just downstairs can feel invaluable.
For solo travellers especially, dining within a hotel can provide comfort and ease without sacrificing atmosphere.
At Sofitel Roma Villa Borghese, guests can enjoy dinner at Settimo, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant overlooking Rome’s rooftops and domes. The view is exquisite, the food and wine delicious and it is just a lift ride away.
Having exceptional dining within your hotel transforms an ordinary evening into part of the travel experience itself. The best hotels remove friction and replace it with possibility.
6. Design With Personality
Some hotels could exist almost anywhere in the world.
The most memorable hotels could only exist exactly where they are.
Great hotels don’t simply provide a beautiful room. They reflect the culture, history, landscape and spirit of a destination, becoming part of the experience rather than simply the backdrop to it.
In Peru’s Sacred Valley, Rio Sagrado sits quietly amongst gardens, mountains and the Urubamba River. Built from local stone and natural materials, it feels entirely at home in its surroundings. The transition from busy Cusco to the Sacred Valley begins the moment you arrive, allowing guests to slow down, breathe deeply and settle into the rhythm of the Andes.
Half a world away, Rambagh Palace in Jaipur offers a completely different experience. Once the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur, it allows guests to step inside the extraordinary history and romance of Rajasthan. Marble corridors, sweeping gardens and royal hospitality aren’t simply decorative details; they are part of understanding the destination itself.
The finest hotels don’t compete with a destination.
They help tell its story.

7. Wellness and Restoration Should Never Be an Afterthought
Modern travel is no longer simply about seeing more.
Increasingly, women are looking for journeys that leave them feeling better than when they departed.
The finest hotels understand this shift. Wellness is integrated into the guest experience through thoughtful design, excellent spas, fitness facilities, quiet spaces and opportunities to slow down.
Santani Wellness Resort in Sri Lanka is one of the finest examples we have encountered. Perched high in the hills outside Kandy, it was designed around simplicity, stillness and wellbeing. Open to the surrounding landscape, it encourages guests to disconnect from the noise of everyday life and reconnect with themselves.
Capella Singapore achieves something similar through its lush tropical setting and peaceful atmosphere, whilst Six Senses Fiji surrounded by crystal clear waters and sophisticated wellness facilities that will leave you feeling sublime.
A truly great hotel doesn’t just help you sleep well, it helps you travel well.

8. There’s No Place Like Home
Sometimes the most memorable accommodation isn’t a hotel at all.
Over the years, we’ve increasingly incorporated private villas, country houses and exclusive-use properties into our journeys because they create something entirely different.
A hotel allows you to visit a destination. A villa allows you to live in it.
Whether it’s gathering around a long table in Tuscany learning to cook pasta with your group, waking slowly in a historic house in Daylesford or spending a week in a private villa surrounded by the lush greenery of Ubud, these properties create a feeling of home that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.
The pace changes and the experience becomes more personal. Morning coffee may stretch into lively conversation, books are left open beside the pool, local produce arrives from nearby markets and you settle in rather than pass through.
For many women, these stays become the moments they remember most because they offer something increasingly rare in modern travel: the chance to belong to a place, even if only for a moment.
Sometimes the accommodation isn’t simply part of the story. Sometimes it becomes the story.
The Accommodation Test
When choosing where to stay, ask yourself one simple question:
“Will I look forward to returning here at the end of the day?”
If the answer is yes, you’ve probably found the right one.
Thinking back on your own travels, the accommodation you’ll never forget is unlikely to be memorable because of the thread count or the marble bathroom. You’ll remember it because of how it made you feel.
Because the best places to stay doesn’t simply support a journey, they become part of the reason you remember it.
