Because sometimes the wisest thing you can do is step away before life forces you to.

There’s a strange kind of applause in our world for women who do everything — the ones who stretch themselves between businesses, families, friendships, inboxes that multiply overnight, and calendars that forget how to breathe. We’re celebrated for our resilience, our stamina, our “I’ve got this” energy… until suddenly, we don’t.

I didn’t realise how close I was to burning out until I found myself sitting at my desk, staring at my laptop, completely unable to remember what I was meant to be doing. Tasks that should take ten minutes were dragging into an hour. My fuse was frighteningly short. Concentration was a memory. And sleep? Forget it — my brain had become a late-night circus.

So I did the only thing that made sense:  I booked a flight, packed too many books, and quite literally ran away to Fiji.

Not for glamour. For necessity.  A stop-and-flop escape mixed with a quiet reading retreat — the kind of “nothingness” that gives you back to yourself.

It reminded me of something women often forget: burnout doesn’t arrive with drama. It arrives quietly, subtly, and with astonishing stealth — and the art lies in recognising the signs before they sweep the floor out from under you.

1. Notice the unravel long before it snaps

Burnout rarely announces itself.

It creeps in as tiredness that sleep can’t fix, fuzzy thinking that’s wildly out of character, or the sudden inability to focus on even the simplest task. You feel “off,” but you keep pushing because that’s what you do.

These aren’t failures. They’re invitations, whispers asking you to pause before your body chooses for you.

The constant feeling of panic and feeling out of control was my tipping point.

2. Give yourself permission to walk out of the building

Women are exceptional at coping — and terrible at pausing.

We wait for the quieter week, the calmer season, the mythical moment when everything is finally “under control.”

It never comes.

And so we need to grant ourselves permission to step outside — emotionally and physically — even when the world still wants something from us.
You don’t have to earn rest. You just have to take it.

3. Go somewhere that removes temptation

Home seems like a good idea… until you get there.

The laptop is too close.  The chores are too loud. And suddenly you’re reorganising cupboards instead of resting.

Escape is essential.

Choose somewhere that changes your breathing:
A soft-adventure walk in the wilderness.
A reading retreat where days dissolve into chapters.
A sun-drenched stop-and-flop (Fiji was mine).
Or simply your favourite quiet corner of the world.

The destination matters less than the distance you create.

4. Master the digital detox (the hardest art of all)

This is the cliff-edge moment.

We tell ourselves we can “just check in quickly,” but that quick check becomes an afternoon. The world will not collapse if you disconnect — but you might collapse if you don’t.

Leave the laptop. Let the emails wait. And for the love of serenity, don’t post your “relaxing break” online.

The magic is in the silence between notifications.

5. Treat yourself, gently and without justification

When you’re depleted, pleasure matters.

Order the cocktail.
Buy the book.
Take the longer walk.
Choose the nicer room.
Let your break actually feel like a break.

Treating yourself isn’t indulgence.  It’s nourishment.

6. Be kind to yourself

Not soft. Not martyrdom-free. Just genuinely kind.

Rest isn’t weakness. Pausing isn’t quitting.

Doing nothing — truly nothing — can be the reset that recalibrates everything.

And when you return?  You return clearer, steadier, and more yourself than you’ve been in weeks or even months.

Because the point of doing nothing isn’t absence.  It’s renewal.

A quiet reminder from Fiji (and from me)

If there’s one thing this escape has reinforced, it’s that doing nothing isn’t indulgent — it’s essential.  It’s the reset that allows everything else to feel possible again.

And this is, at its heart, what Travelling Divas has always been about. Not racing. Not performing. Not “filling every moment.” But creating beautifully considered spaces where women can step out of their everyday and into something that feels like oxygen.

Time for yourself is not a luxury.  It’s the baseline from which everything good flows.

PS: A gentle reminder

If this stirred something in you — even a whisper — follow it.  Your version of a pause might be a walk, a weekend, or a far-flung adventure. Whatever shape it takes, choose the breath you need.
