Day 2 – Saturday 25: Exploring Amman and her ancient surrounds, then to wine…
This morning drive to Iraq El-Amir, located near the narrow fertile valley of Wadi Essair, its olive trees and springs a contrast to the bare, treeless plateau around Amman. Iraq El-Amir is marked by the ruins of Qasr El-Abd (Palace of the Slave), a large Hellenistic palace, and exploration reveals eleven caves carved into the cliff face, including Iraq El-Amir (Cave of the Prince).
Continue to the Iraq Al-Amir Women’s Cooperative Society, founded in 1993 by Queen Noor’s foundation, where you have breakfast. The cooperative was established to teach women the skills of weaving, paperwork, pottery and other handicrafts. The idea was to preserve the region’s unique architectural heritage and to create more jobs for women, allowing them to contribute to their society. Meet the women over a traditionally brewed coffee, hear their stories and learn about their handmade fabrics, naturally produced soaps, pottery and ceramics, paper-making and cooking.
After lunch venture up to the citadel, situated on one of the seven hills that originally made up Amman, a good place to begin a tour of the city’s archaeological sites: the regal columns of a Roman temple in silhouette against the sky, the elegant capitals of a Byzantine church, endlessly inventive carvings in the Umayyad Palace, and digs and ruins everywhere you walk. Spend time wandering through the National Archaeological Museum, home to a collection of artefacts which date from prehistoric times to the 15th century. Take a seat in the magnificently restored 6,000 seat Roman Amphitheatre built during the reign of Antonius Pius in 138-161 CE.
This evening enjoy an exclusive wine tasting experience. Established in the 1950’s, Jordan River Wines boasts the country’s finest state of the art winery. The climate and basalt desert combine to provide one of the world’s most distinctive terroirs growing more than 40 grape varieties, which are handpicked and crafted into more than 20 wine varietals. Enjoy a tasting of a selection of wines along with a grazing board.
Overnight Accommodation: Fairmont Amman
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, grazing board with wine tasting
Day 3 – Sunday 26: Explore Mount Nebo & Madaba – then to Petra…
Today transfer by private vehicle from Amman to Petra stopping en route at Mount Nebo and Madaba.
Mount Nebo is the mountain where Moses was allowed to see the Holy Land…but not allowed to enter it. Nowadays the mountain is a memorial site. Here you will find the ‘Church of Moses’, built by the first Christians. Ever since the first days of Christianity this mountain has been a holy place and a destination for pilgrimage. Like Moses, you can have a great view over Jordan, the Dead Sea and Israel. When the weather is clear, you should even be able to see Jerusalem, which is about 60 kilometres away.
Continue to Madaba, the ‘City of Mosaics’, perched on an archaeological site with more than 4,000 years of history buried beneath it. The quality and quantity of mosaic flooring has made Madaba one of the most prominent cities in the world for mosaics. St. George’s Church houses a world-famous mosaic floor depicting a large mosaic map of Palestine and at its centre, a detailed map of Jerusalem as it was during the sixth century AD. Enjoy lunch in Madaba at Hikayet Sitti, a small cosy house that has been restored to a beautiful restaurant, where the old meets the new. The restaurant is run by local women, who put their hands together to give you delicious hearty meal with a warm welcome.
After lunch, continue to Petra for overnight where you will check-in and spend the remainder of the afternoon at leisure.
Dinner tonight is at Al-Iwan restaurant at your hotel.
Overnight Accommodation: Movenpick Resort Petra
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4 – Monday 27: Exploring the wonder that is Petra…
Today commence an incredible day of sightseeing.
Maybe start your visit with an optional horse ride from the main gate of Petra to the entrance of the old city. Then walk on foot along the ‘Siq’ to visit the incredible rose-red city of Petra. The ancient city of Petra was built from 800 BC to 100 AD by Nabatean Arabs. In this era Petra was a fortress, carved out of craggy rocks in an area which was virtually inaccessible.
In the first and second centuries, after the Romans took over, the city reached the peak of its fame. Petra covers an area of about 100 square km, where over 800 monuments can be found. When shipping slowly displaced caravan routes, the city’s importance gradually dwindled; it fell into disuse and was lost to the world until 1812, when it was re-discovered by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burkhart.
Nowadays Petra is Jordan’s Number 1 tourist attraction, known as the ‘rose-red city, half as old as time’. The spectacular Khazneh (the Treasury), starred in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (insta moment for sure!).
Other sights include the Roman Theatre, the Corinthian and Palace Tombs and the Roman Road.
Enjoy lunch at Basin Restaurant. Located about 2km inside the gates of Petra, the Basin Restaurant by the Crowne Plaza Petra stands amongst all the splendour of Petra. Already quite a trek to get to the restaurant, this is a great place to stop and rest your tired feet.
After returning to your hotel for some time at leisure, this evening visit Old Village Resort located in the mountains just outside Petra for a cooking experience followed by dinner. Discover Jordanian cooking in a relaxed atmosphere as you learn to make traditional dishes under the supervision of an experienced chef before sitting down to enjoy a delicious meal of your creations.
Overnight Accommodation: Movenpick Resort Petra
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5 – Tuesday 28: Wadi Rum adventure and coffee with the Bedouin…
Today depart Petra for the Dead Sea via spectacular Wadi Rum.
Otherwise known as Valley of the Moon, the largest and most magnificent of Jordan’s desert landscapes, Wadi Rum is a stupendous, timeless place, virtually untouched by humans. A maze of monolithic rock-scapes rise up from the desert floor to heights of 1750 metres creating a natural challenge for serious mountaineers. Hikers can enjoy the tranquillity of the boundless empty spaces. This was the setting for the film Lawrence of Arabia, and the actual location where T.E. Lawrence set his camp.
In the 1980s seven natural columns varying in height located en route to Wadi Rum were named ‘The Seven Pillars of Wisdom’ after Lawrence’s book penned in the aftermath of the war (although the ‘Seven Pillars’ referred to in the book have no connection with Rum). Enjoy a two hour excursion of Wadi Rum by private four-wheel-drive vehicle. Please note that this excursion uses a basic, but comfortable, vehicle, which is operated by a local charity foundation. All money generated through these tours helps support the livelihood of the local Bedouins.
A highlight is a coffee/tea stop with the local Bedouin. Jordanian Arabic coffee is strong and served in tiny cups. It is often flavoured with cardamom. Don’t try to drink the last mouthful, as it will be full of coffee grounds! Shake the cup to indicate that you do not want a refill. Coffee is an important symbol of hospitality and it is very common to be offered coffee or tea in small shops, or to be invited to have coffee in someone’s home. It is good etiquette to accept. Tea is served in small glasses and is usually very sweet. Tea with fresh mint makes a refreshing variation.
Continue to the Dead Sea where, for millennia, people have been drawn by the medicinal qualities of the mineral-laden waters. Swimming here, with its odd sensation of weightlessness, is an unforgettable experience.
Tonight dinner is included at Rehan Restaurant at your hotel.
Overnight Accommodation: Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6 – Wednesday 29: Departure to home…
Sadly, our Jordanian adventure must come to an end.
This morning enjoy the resort’s lavish facilities and soak up the mineral rich waters whose medicinal qualities have drawn visitors to the area for millennia. Swimming here, with its odd sensation of weightlessness, is a memorable experience. The high levels of salt in the water are nearly 10 times that of the ocean and keep the body afloat, whilst the variety of minerals, including magnesium, sodium, potassium and bromine, promotes health and wellbeing.
Later today you will be met and transferred back to Amman Airport in time for your departure flight. Please note VIP assistance has been included for you. Or maybe you should stay another day…
